“Pachappa Camp: The First Koreatown in the United States”

Edward T. Chang, PhD, will discuss the first Koreatown in the United States, which is in Southern California. 

Chang is a professor of ethnic studies and founding director of the Young Oak Kim Center for Korean American Studies at the University of California, Riverside.

A prolific researcher, Chang has published 12 books, seven edited volumes and numerous articles. His latest book is Pachappa Camp: The First Koreatown in the United States. 

As an expert on the Los Angeles 1992 civil unrest and race relations between Korean and African American communities, Chang researches how to build peace in inter-ethnic communities.  He has received numerous awards and recognition for his research on Korean American studies including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Korean Friendship Society in 2024. He also received the Order of Civil Merit, Magnolia Medal in 2019 and the Presidential Citation from the President of the Republic of Korea in 1995.
